October 13th will be an optional all day pre-conference nonviolence training. Travelers can register anytime and take workshops in afternoon. Tuesday October 14th will be workshops on militarization, depleted uranium, how to speak to the “other side,” peace-promoting economics, and nonviolence training for all participants. You are invitied to participate in Wage Peace of Jacksonville’s Peace Festival on Saturday, September 20th from 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm. titled “Flashback to the 60’s - Raising the Spirit of Peace and Love, Not War.” We will have food, vendors, and live music throughout the day.

It will be located on the grounds of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Jacksonville (UUCJ). Presents his new book BROKEN GOVERNMENT: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches

John Dean has become one of the most trenchant and respected commentators on the current state of American politics and one of the most outspoken and perceptive critics of the administration of George W. Bush in his New York Times bestsellers Conservatives Without Conscience and Worse than Watergate.

In his latest anti-Republican polemic, ex-Nixon White House counsel and Watergate whistle-blower Dean moves from policy to process—how necessary government functions are corrupted and hobbled by Republican politicians and their ethos of authoritarianism, secrecy, partisanship, and dogmatic contempt for the public sphere. It’s a long indictment. The last Republican Congress, Dean contends, rubber-stamped Bush’s policies, shut Democrats out of the legislative process, neglected pressing issues, and made a shambles of government finances. There will be a screening of the film IRAN (Is Not the Problem) at First Baptist Church of Palo Alto. The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Larry Everest, author of Oil, Power, and Empire, and Paul George, Director of Peninsula Peace and Justice Center.

IRAN (Is Not the Problem) is a new feature-length film responding to the failure of the American mass media to provide the public with relevant and accurate information about the standoff between the U.S. and Iran – as happened before in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq.

We have heard that Iran is a nuclear menace defying the international community, bent on “wiping Israel off the map”, supporting terrorism, and unwilling to negotiate. This documentary disputes these claims as they are presented to us and puts them in the context of present and historical U.S. imperialism and hypocrisy with respect to Iran. It looks at the struggle for democracy inside Iran and the consequences of escalation and a potential U.S. and/or Israeli attack, and suggests some alternatives to consider.

The 79-minute documentary features Antonia Juhasz (The Bu$h Agenda), Larry Everest (Oil, Power, and Empire), and other activists and Iranian-Americans. There are differences of opinion between many of the voices in the film, but all agree that a war would be unjustified.

What does the rest of the world think of U.S. domestic and foreign policy? While the U.S. is perceived as a beacon of democracy, how does it compare to other democratic nations? Americans are continually told through the media that freedom and democracy are supported abroad, but is it true?

Shot in ten countries, Considering Democracy weaves together seemingly different topics into an interconnected tapestry of information. People from around the world act as a mirror for Americans to see a reflection of the political power of the United States.

The hour-length documentary brings views from around the world, mixing it with information and empowerment, including study and discussion menus to help people continue the dialog.

Giving a Report and Update from the Middle East

Part of the “Other Voices” televisions series.

Joel Beinin, one of the country’s leading experts on the Middle East and a frequent guest on “Other Voices”, has spent the past year in Egypt, where he served as Director of the Middle East Studies Program at the American University in Cairo. As we welcome Joel back to the area, we’ll talk to him about his experiences living and teaching in Egypt, as well as getting an update on his particular area of expertise: the Israel-Palestine conflict. We’ll explore the current status of the “peace process”, Israel’s increasing tensions with Iran and Syria, and the internal political turmoil in Israel.

Joel Beinin has served as President of the Middle East Studies Association of North America and as a contributing editor to Middle East Report (a highly recommended resource). Among the many books he has written or co-authored are Intifada: The Palestinian Uprising (1989), Workers and Peasants in the Modern Middle East (2001), and The Struggle for Sovereignty: Palestine And Israel (2006).

Schansberg to hold Town Hall Meeting in Seymour on Thursday

Dr. Eric Schansberg will hold a Town Hall meeting in Room 301 of the Seymour City Hall on Thursday, August 21st, from 6:00-7:00 PM. (City Hall is located at 309 N. Chestnut St. in downtown Seymour.)

Dr. Schansberg is an economics professor at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany and the Libertarian candidate for Congress in the 9th District.

Schansberg will deliver prepared remarks and then field questions from those in the audience.

In his prepared remarks, Dr. Schansberg will address:

· gas prices and energy policy—policies that will work (domestic drilling and a stronger dollar) and policies that will not work (regulations on speculators, subsidies to energy companies, etc.)
